Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood
The district is noted for its role as a center of the 1960s hippie movement and became the haven for a number of psychedelic rock performers and groups of the time.
Dangling Legs at the Piedmont Boutique
The Dangling Legs at the Piedmont Boutique is an icon of Haight Street. The store sells a selection of quite racy wares, including lingerie and fetish wear. The legs were designed by local artist Barry Forman.
Four Seasons Houses
This row of colourful Queen Anne-style homes, built in 1896 really stands out.
Grateful Dead House
Members of the band The Grateful Dead lived in the purple Victorian house located at 710 Ashbury St. from 1966 until 1968.
Janis Joplin’s House - Ashbury Street
In 1967, Janis Joplin moved into a second-floor apartment at 635 Ashbury St. with her lover Peggy Caserta, with whom she had a recurring relationship.
The Red House
Jimi Hendrix lived in 1524A Haight Street for a few years in the 1960’s. The Jimi Hendrix House is also called the Red House after it was painted red in the rock star’s honour.
Charles Manson House
Charles Manson spent a few short months in 1967 at 636 Cole with early recruits into his Family: his girlfriend Mary Brunner; Susan Atkins; Patricia Krenwinkel; and Lynnette “Squeaky” Fromme.
Amoeba Music - San Francisco
Located in a converted bowling alley, selling CDs, vinyl, and music paraphernalia, with occassional band signings and performances.
Hippie Hill
Hippie Hill is an important location during the Summer of Love and was the place to go to listen to live music by Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and others. It was also a great spot for drum circles.
Jefferson Airplane House
In 1968, Jefferson Airplane, a pioneer of psychedilc rock, bought the mansion for $70,000.
Robotaxi
Hail a robotaxi and drive to Alamo Square.
William Westerfeld House
A great example of an Italianate Villa. Both Kenneth Anger and Anton LaVey lived at the house, along with future Manson follower Bobby Beausoleil.
McAllister Street Houses
Colorful and stunning Italianate-style houses.
Fillmore Street Cafe
Fillmore Street Cafe features a variety of American comfort food, such as sandwiches, salads, and burgers. They also have a selection of coffee drinks, pastries, and desserts.
The Fillmore
In the mid-1960s, the Fillmore Auditorium became the focal point for psychedelic music and the counterculture in general.
