Experience

Grünerløkka is home to a couple of the Oslo’s top destinations for coffee tourists, in Tim Wendelboe and Supreme Roastworks. These intimate coffee shops serve up exquisite coffee and sell bags of their own roast. In the nearby streets, alongside the trendy shops and restaurants, you can find knockout examples of some staple local treats. Try sweet buns with cinnamon or custard, waffles with brown cheese, and a prime example of Norway’s fast food king: the humble hot dog. The Mathallen Food Hall, down by the Akerselva River, makes for a fitting finale. Shops and restaurants both inside and around the former industrial workshop serve up local and international fare, ensuring there’s something for all budgets and appetites.

Route

Tim Wendelboe

Serving coffee and nothing else, the exclusive Tim Wendelboe espresso bar offers premium espresso-based drinks and Aeropress filter coffee. The staff are expertly trained and happy to help you craft the perfect cup.

Godt Brød

Indulge in a typical Norwegian sweet bun, known as a “bolle”, in this spacious yet cosy bakery café. Sandwiches and salads are available for lunch, alongside local juices and kombucha. Gluten free options available.

Haralds Vaffel

Try a perfect example of a Norwegian waffle with all the required toppings. This little shop also dishes up smooth ice cream and fresh donuts. Combine them all for the ultimate sugar hit.

Supreme Roastworks

A speciality coffee shop and roaster serving espresso-based drinks, V60 pourover, and endless cups of satisfying filter brew. The coffee is crafted at the highest level, while the staff and location remain down to earth.

Syverkiosken

Norwegians love hot dogs and you won’t find one much better than at this historic wooden kiosk. The hot dogs are cooked in a broth that remains a family secret and served with extras like onions and potato salad.

Mathallen Food Hall

Mathallen features food and produce from Norway and around the world. Pick up some bread and fresh seafood, relax with a drink, or sit down for a meal inside the hall or at one of the surrounding restaurants.

Practicalities

  • For a Scandinavian fine dining experience, book into the Michelin-starred Kontrast. The restaurant is two minutes up the steps from Mathallen

About

This route was designed by Aaron Beaton in collaboration with Uptaste.

Aaron Beaton

Originally from Australia, I left Melbourne for a trip to Europe over a decade ago. Now settled in Oslo, I’m always on the hunt for the most interesting food, coffee, and cocktails. I’m as at home in city squares and parks as I am hiking quiet trails in the mountains. I head into nature when I can and I have written hiking and travel guides for locations around Norway

Uptaste

What is Uptaste? We’re something like a travel agency business (although we don’t sell flights or hotels). Instead, we specialise in finding the right place to eat, wherever and whenever you are, using location intelligence combined with expert and community curation. Uptaste destinations will rarely be restaurants; they’ll be shops, they’ll be street traders, they’ll be local markets, or some other easy-to-miss but hard-to-forget place.
