Experience

Try some of the most Dutch dishes in the country, while walking along beautiful canals and with views of the city. Have you ever heard about the Dutch herring, a traditional dish that is only sold a few months a year? Or maybe you’ve heard about the Dutch small fried snacks? Bitterballen or kaassoufles maybe? The Dutch love good food and the Dutch love good weather. So when the weather is nice, the whole country goes outside and tries to snatch up a spot on a terrace at a bar. Moreover, they love to walk and cycle, and have more bicycles in their country than citizens! Try out this tour to experience the true Dutch feeling!

Route

Stubbe’s Haring

Try one of the most Dutch streetfood dishes in the country - pickled herring with chopped onions . Ask the owner how you should eat it to get the full experience.

Pancakes Amsterdam

Pancakes are a Dutch delight. In the 9 streets - or Negen Straatjes - you can find a lot of shops, among which this small restaurant. Try one of the traditional pancakes or go for a sweet or savoury one.

van Stapele Koekmakerij

They’ve never spent money on marketing, and only make 1 kind of cookie, but in front of this tiny shop you can always find a long line of hungry customers.

Brouwerij ‘t Ij

This brewery is known throughout the whole country, and lies next to the beautiful Ij canal. This specific tasting spot is known for its windmill and delicious snacks.

De Pindakaaswinkel Amsterdam

At this store they believe peanut butter is an essential object in your travel suitcase.

Mama Makan

The dishes you can eat here are inspired by Indonesia, and if you try a complete “rijsttafel” you will get to try more flavours than you can count.

Hanneke’s Boom Brewery

Right across the well-known Nemo museum and the National Martime Museum, this cultural hotspot can be found. Hanneke’s Boom has a big terrace with an own harbour, a bar, restaurant, and happy people everywhere you look.

Practicalities

  • This route is based upon the Dutch walking behaviours - it is quite long! You may prefer to take a bike, but do this by foot if you prefer a long day

About

This route was designed by Uptaste.

Uptaste

What is Uptaste? We’re something like a travel agency business (although we don’t sell flights or hotels). Instead, we specialise in finding the right place to eat, wherever and whenever you are, using location intelligence combined with expert and community curation. Uptaste destinations will rarely be restaurants; they’ll be shops, they’ll be street traders, they’ll be local markets, or some other easy-to-miss but hard-to-forget place.
