Experience

We start at one of the iconic local spots, It’s Raw Poke Shop. This stop offers some authentic poke made by a native Hawaiian family. They started as a humble food truck, but found their brick and mortar home in Ocean Beach, alongside other small, locally-owned businesses. As you move to your next step, saunter along the boardwalk to the pier. Blue Water Seafood, across the street from the ocean, is up next. They prepare your order from fish they caught that morning. After some fresh Sashimi, pick up Newport Avenue. O.B. is known for being fiercely independent, and protective of their cozy neighborhood. Make sure to check out all the beautiful murals as you make your way down Newport Avenue. OB local artist Rich James began the Mural project in 1999. Mike’s Taco Club is next- another local hangout that is serving up the best octopus tacos in San Diego. Everything is fresh, and housemade. Grab a Horchata shake to wash down your taco. Mike makes it from scratch. Stop four is Ocean Beach Kabob, another family-owned eatery known for authentic Mediterranean bites. Newport Avenue is home to some of the best antique stores in San Diego, check them out as you move along. Stop five is The Joint, an award-winning Tapas venue. Everything is delicious, but my favorite is the Charcuterie and Cheese board. It has pickled veg, honeycomb, and garlic confit! Your last stop is Wonderland Ocean Pub. This place has the best views in O.B. and some delicious ceviche

Route

It’s Raw Poke Shop

It’s Raw Poke Shop is your one-stop shop. It’s family-owned, and they serve authentic Hawaiian poke every Tuesday through Sunday, from noon until 6 p.m. You’ll have plenty of delicious, fresh options to choose from here, but it’s recommended to try at least a couple different kinds of poke. Cash only.

Ocean Beach Pier

Beautiful pier stretches out over Pacific Ocean. This is one of the great spots for a photo with the gorgeous backdrop of Sunset Cliffs. It is open to the public year round.

Blue Water Seafood

You may recognize the name from Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, but this is Blue Water’s second location. Everything is just as fresh and plentiful as the original location, but the wait and seating is far improved. There was a line, but it was short and then there were plenty of tables with gorgeous ocean views! Grab the sashimi app here and find a picnic table outside to enjoy the gorgeous ocean view.

Mike’s Taco Club

Small, non-nonsense taco shop where everything is homemade and fresh. Wide variety of tacos, homemade drinks, including shakes and aguas frescas. As O.B. as it gets- local, independent, unique with a fabulous ocean view.

OB Kabob

This is the only Middle Eastern eatery in O.B. Everything is made in house from the dolmas to the tzatziki to the schawarma. You will feel like one of the family, a very full member of the family, when you leave.

The Joint

Inventive tapas, fresh sushi, cozy neighborhood feel with an outstanding sake and local craft beer selection.

Wonderland Ocean Pub

Premiere views of the ocean, pier, and blazing O.B. sunset. Specials every day. Live music. Fantastic mussels and ceviche, and great selection of local beers. Don’t miss the ringing of the bell at sunset.

Practicalities

  • The Joint does not open until 16:20 so starting around 15:00 would be best
